SBK Galerie 23 Hedendaagse Afrikaanse Kunst

Uitnodiging opening expositie 'Umbuhle Bemvelo' met werk van Thembeka Heidi Sincuba

Op 17 september om 16:00 uur wordt bij Galerie 23 de solo-expositie 'Ubuhle Bemvelo' van Thembeka Heidi Sincuba geopend in aanwezigheid van de kunstenaar zelf. Je bent van harte uitgenodigd om de werken te komen bekijken. 

Thembeka Heidi Sincuba is een non-binaire kunstenaar en wetenschapper. Hen beweegt zich tussen verschillende media en combineert deze met elkaar, waaronder schilderen, tekenen, fotografie, video, performance, textiel en installatie. 12 jaar geleden exposeerde Sincuba voor het eerst bij Galerie 23. In de tussentijd heeft hen een academisch traject gevolgd in Londen en Kaapstad, als docent gewerkt en internationaal geëxposeerd. We verheugen ons erop dat we hen na 12 jaar weer kunnen zien sinds hun afstuderen aan de kunstacademie in Arnhem! 

Sincuba’s transdisciplinaire praktijk onderzoekt vluchtigheid, queer theorie en Afrikaanse voorouderlijke kennisstelsels, om koloniale en patriarchale manieren van bestaan en weten te verstoren. Een belangrijke schakel in hun ontwikkeling is een residentie in Scandinavië waar hen verder in contact kwam met het werk van Hilma af Klint en Lefifi Tladi. Hun rauwe figuratie heeft plaatsgemaakt voor een levendige, haast esthetische abstractie.

Toevalligerwijs is vanaf 7 oktober het werk van kunstenaar Hilma af Klint te bewonderen in het Kunstmuseum in den Haag, in de tentoonstelling 'Hilma af Klint & Piet Mondriaan'. Het is een leuke gelegenheid om het werk van Sincuba in onze galerie te bewonderen en te vergelijken met een van haar belangrijkste inspiratiebronnen! 

Ben je benieuwd naar de meer abstracte werken die Sincuba speciaal voor deze expositie gemaakt heeft? Kom dan zondag 17 september langs op de opening die om 16:00 uur begint. De expositie blijft vervolgens te bezichtigen tot en met 22 oktober 2023.

Op 17 september wordt tevens de expositie 'We Am Become Dirt' met werk van SBK Sprouts Young Talent 2022 winnaar Martine van Lubeek geopend in Galerie 1, welke om 15:00 uur plaatsvindt.

On September 17th at 4:00 PM, the solo exhibition 'Ubuhle Bemvelo' by Thembeka Heidi Sincuba will be opening at Gallery 23 in the presence of the artist herself. You are cordially invited to come and view the artworks.

Thembeka Heidi Sincuba is a non-binary artist and scientist. They work across various mediums, blending them, including painting, drawing, photography, video, performance, textiles, and installation. Sincuba first exhibited at Gallery 23 twelve years ago. Since then, they have pursued an academic journey in London and Cape Town, worked as a lecturer, and exhibited internationally. We are excited to have them back after 12 years since their graduation from the art academy in Arnhem!

Coincidentally, starting from October 7th, you can admire the work of artist Hilma af Klint at the Kunstmuseum in The Hague in the exhibition 'Hilma af Klint & Piet Mondriaan'. It's a great opportunity to appreciate Sincuba's work in our gallery and compare it with one of her major sources of inspiration!
